PHASES OF STRUCTURAL DESIGN WORKS
PHASES OF STRUCTURAL DESIGN WORKS
This explains different stages followed for
accomplishment of structural design work of different structures either whole
or member of the structure.
The following are the involved stages
- Preliminary structural
design
In this phase the sizes
(dimensions) of different structural members forming structure are proposed in
approximate by referring experience and code requirement.
The proposed dimensions of the
members are the one which used in next stage of design that is load estimation.
- Estimation of loads
This involved the estimation of amount
of loadings that the structure will have to carry on its life time; this
includes wind loads, live loads and self weight.
- Structural analysis
In structural analysis we will have to determine
the effects of loadings to the structure, this involves the determination of
internal forces or internal resistance of the structural members and deflection
at different points of structure.
- Safety and
serviceability check
In this phase the sizes and
materials of structural members are checked, if they can withstand the effects
of loadings which are internal forces and deflections found in analysis phase.
The safety and serviceability
checking of structural members on loadings are done per standard design code
requirements of certain country.
If the requirements are satisfied
then the design drawings and construction specification are prepared and
construction phase starts.
- Revised structural
design
If the requirement was not met in
safety and serviceability check phase, this phase comes where by structural
member dimensions and materials are modified.
So we will have structural members of
different properties, this makes us to repeat phases from structural analysis
to know the loading effects to modified members.
The repetition proceeds up to
safety and serviceability check until the requirements are satisfied, so that
the structure to be constructed can be safe and serviceable.
