HOW TO FIND THE MEAN GIRTH OF THE SIMPLE BUILDING

Mean girth of building, this is the centerline perimeter or circumference of the building, which describes length of the building.

The following text show how to find the mean girth of simple building plan shown below for superstructure walling which can help in quantity determination of different materials to be applied for paint work, plaster work, blocks or brick work.

Important Terms

1. External Dimensions.
These are dimensions measured from      external surface of the building's walls, these always show the extent of building on plot.

2. Internal Dimensions.
These are dimensions measured from internal surfaces of the building walls, these always show sizes of rooms.

3. Corner.
These are interconnection or points where two non colinear walls meet.

4. Recesses.
There are the partition or adjoining walls which forms rooms or which were not considered in exterior girth of building determination.

Description

The mean girth of simple building for superstructure block wall of thickness 150 mm.

Internal Dimension
Length                          6.45
Width                           6.80

Add corners
4/2/0.5/0.15                  0.60
                                                       13.85
Add Recesses (Internal Walls)
Portion A
5.50  add corners  2/0.5/0.15          5.65

Portion B
3.10 add corners  2/0.5/0.15           3.25

Portion C
1.50 add corners 2/0.5/0.15            1.65

Portion D
2.20 add corners 2/0.5/0.15            2.35

The mean girth of the given plan is the summation of measured dimensions = 26.75m

The steps of calculating mean girth of building from external dimensions is similar to that from internal dimensions of building, the only difference is;

From Internal Dimension

From External Dimension

Corners are added to internal dimensions to have centerline dimensions.

Corners are deducted from external dimensions centerline dimensions.
