HOW TO CALCULATE AMOUNT OF MORTAR PER S.Q.M FOR BLOCK WALL

HOW TO CALCULATE AMOUNT OF  MORTAR  PER S.Q.M FOR BLOCK WALL

The amount of cement paste required as mortar per square meter can be calculated through the following steps
1.      Knowing the dimension of the blocks to be used for construction.
Here, let’s say we use the cement concrete block of size 150 x230 x450 where by 150 s the thickness of the wall.
These dimension s (all dimension are in mm) help to find the area of one block forming wall surface as follows
Area of one block = 230 x 450
                             = 103,500mm2

2.       Knowing the new dimension of blocks with cement mortar.
New dimension of concrete block means the height and length of a block with the thickness of mortar which is 15m, then the new height id 245mm and new length is 265mm
From these new dimensions we can get new area of one cement concrete block as follows
Area of one block = 245 x 465
                             = 113,925mm2
                             =1.14 x 10-1m3

3.      Calculate the amount of cement past for one block
Amount cement mortar for one block can simply calculated by firstly, calculating the surface area of cement mortar of one block on the wall face, and then multiply it with the thickness of the wall 150mm.
Amount of cement mortar for one block = 10,425 x 150
                                                            = 1,563,750 mm3
= 1.564 x 10-3 m3 (wet condition)
We are required to convert this wet cement mortar into a dry one by wet-dry conversion factor which is 1.3
Dry volume of cement mortar = 1.564 x 10-3 m3 x 1.3
                                                = 2.033 x 10-3 m3

4.      Calculate the amount of blocks for 1square meter of wall
The amount of concrete blocks per square meter can be calculated as shown below

Number of concrete block = 1m2 / area of one block with new dimension

    = 1/ 0.114
   = 9 blocks

5.      Calculate the amount of cement mortar for all block in 1 square meter.
The amount of cement mortar per square meter can be calculated very easily now as shown below
Amount of cement mortar per 1 m2 = 2.033 x 10-3 m3 x 9
         = 1.83 x10-2 m3

6.      Calculating the amount of cement and sand in mortar per 1 square meter.
The amount of cement and sand can be calculated from sum-ratio method as follows, if we used a cement-sand mix ratio of 1:6, then the sum of two numbers will be 7 and their ratios are 1:7 for cement and 6:7 for sand
The volume of each material can be calculated as indicated below
Amount of cement =  x 1.83 x10-2 m3
                               = 2.61 x 10-3 m3

    Amount of sand =  x 1.83 x10-2 m3
     =1.57 x 10-2 m3

    1. First you need to know your block dimensions and how it will be constructed, then the block surface which form part of wall, its length and height are the one used in calculation with addition of mortar thickness in each dimension to have new block surface area.
